Atsey Mayweather Obituary

Mrs. Atsey Hawkins Mayweather was born in Flat Creek, AL. to the late Mary Hawkins and Deacon Nathaniel Hawkins, Sr.. At an early age she confessed her life to Christ and was a member of Rising Star Baptist Church in Flat Creek, AL. She was peacefully called home to her Heavenly Father on Saturday January 13, 2018. In her early years she attended Dora High School where she was a star basketball player and she graduated top of her class. She later went on to marry her beloved husband, Joe Mayweather, Sr., whom she was married to for 50 years. They  resided in Birmingham and to that union seven children were born. She later joined Greater Temple Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. James A. Gibson, Sr. She was a well known activist for the Birmingham City Schools district and was a past president of the Alabama Education Association. She was also a past president of the PTA at Wilkerson Elementary School. She was often invited to speak on platforms for the Birmingham Board of Education. For everyone that knew her knew not to mess with any of her children. She had a heart of gold and helped anyone that crossed her path and no one was a stranger, especially when it came to cooking. She fed the entire community and plates would be cleaned, especially her Sunday dinner. She loved doing one of the hardest jobs and that was being a homemaker. She took pride in the way she looked and was always dressed to the "T" from head to toe and never left home without her sunglasses. She also loved dancing and listening to her blues. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and seven siblings, Willie Vann, Henry, Philistine, Gus, Sylvester, Maurice and Rev. Nathaniel Hawkins, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory, children: Sherry Crawford, Phillis Famuyiwa, Diane Mayweather, Joe Mayweather, Jr., Rhonda (Worthy, Jr.) Crawford, Krisstophy (Samantha) Mayweather and Traci Mayweather; Siblings: Corine Brooks, Augusta Jones, Wilma James, Mary Grace Hawkins, Myrtle Hawkins, William (Annette) Hawkins, James (Erma) Hawkins, Sr., and Curtis Joe (Deborah) Hawkins; Grandchildren: Johnny, Jr., Sharis, Sherria, Phillip, Sabrina, Illies, Rodrick, Jr., Kaya, Demi, Avian, Worthy III, Keelan and Krisstophy, Jr.; Great-Grandchildren: Jacoby, Fallon, Noelle, and King; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
