Susie Belton Obituary

Susie M. Belton was born on November 22, 1944, in Selma, Alabama, to Thornton Shaw and Susie Mae Shaw. She peacefully departed this life on October 29, 2024. She was affectionately known as Shirley and was beloved by her family and friends.

Susie confessed Christ at an early age, beginning her spiritual journey at Morning Star Baptist Church in Selma, AL. Susie attended R.B. Hudson High School in Selma before moving to Birmingham, Alabama, in 1964, where she built a life centered on faith and family. She worked diligently as a cleaner and later as a caregiver, offering compassionate care to those in need. Susie was married to the late Joe Belton until his passing in 2017.
As she made her home in Birmingham, Alabama, she continued her faithful service at Friendship Baptist Church of Collegeville. Throughout her life, Susie remained a faithful servant of God and, at the time of her passing, was a devoted member of Olivet Monumental Baptist Church.

Susie was a loving mother to her son, Terry (Adrienne) Shaw, and a doting grandmother to her grandchildren, Terrika and Varian Shaw. She was blessed with a close-knit family, including her siblings, many of whom preceded her in death: Eddie Shaw, Nell Wells, Flora Patterson, Thelma Strong, and Floyd Shaw. She leaves behind her cherished siblings Terry(Virginia) Shaw, Oretha Chambers, and Mary (Charles)Marshall, who will continue to hold her memory dear.
Susie’s life was also enriched by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will remember her faith, sassiness, and fashion sense.

In remembrance of a life well-lived and a quick wit, her family and friends celebrate the gift that was Susie Belton. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
