Sister Valerie Johnson Hicks was born to the late Lizzie mae Johnso and Gus T. Johnson on July 10, 1953 in Birmingham, Alabama. She confessed Christ at an early age and later became a member of Homewood Church of Christ. In April 2016, she united with Lily Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate ofvRev. Mark F. Kennedy and served faithfully until health no longer allowed her to do so. She served as secretary of the senior usher board, Sunday school secretary, a member of the culinary committee and also enjoyed vacation bible school. She was educated in the Birmingham Public Schol System where she eas in the band and graduated from A.H. Parker High School in 1971. After many years of working in retail, she retired from Macy's Separtment Store. After fighting a courageous fight with her illness, the Lord called her home on October 31, 2019 to be with those love ones who had gone on before her. She leaves to cherish her memory, one loving son, John Allen Hicks, III; Siblings, Gloria Johnson Griffin and Michael Johnson; Grandchildren, Jovante' N. Hicks and Remy J. Hicks; Great-Grandchildren, King M. Hicks and Zoye Johnson; Close in-laws, John Hicks, Jr. and Randall Hicks; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
